Memories flooded my awareness this morning as I was driving to work on a Friday. There's something about Fridays, this time of year, that evokes that kind of processing, that kind of reminiscing, that kind of, "Oh yeah, I remember....".
I remember more than 20 years ago the day I drove up Interstate 26 to get out of Hurricane Hugo's way, perfect blue skies with not a cloud in sight, only to have it follow me up the interestate that evening in all its terrifying power and majesty. I was in the middle of moving, one-third of my stuff in the old place, one-third in the new, and one-third, the really irreplaceable stuff with me in my car. I figured at least some of it would survive.
And all of it did.
I remember walking to the bus stop in Rome in the morning, all the folks at the coffee bar sipping their espressos and consuming their cornetti, flower stalls in the markets overflowing with their beauty, fresh fruits and vegetables in abundance, the Italian sun blessing it all.
I remember the year I was blessed with new desks in my USA classroom just before school started. A truckload of them had been delivered to my building, and as I was on the first floor, I was an ideal candidate to receive them since that they weren't going to be carried up any stairs in a building without elevators. That, and I exchanged playful banter with the custodial staff everyday, so who else were they going to deliver those desks to?
Exactly.
What a beautiful post.
I love the imagery!
